The air cargo sector has been a true benefactor for the aviation industry, not just for India, but across the world. As a critical organ of the transportation and logistics industry, it has indeed been a champion for the industry, in transporting critical equipment across the corners of the country.

But what lies ahead for air cargo operations in the post-pandemic chapter of this age?

Although India’s air cargo market has been through a hurricane in the past year, yet the days ahead seem to glimmer with rays of hope.

More developments will continue to color the air cargo space, with newer airlines now entering the freighter market. Even Airfreight volumes that had gone down in the past months will likely come up once airline schedules start expanding. This will help bring down skyrocketing freight rates.

CSC India, India’s market leader in air cargo handling, has been an integral part of the air cargo industry and has seen the changes in the industry, up-close and personal. With all the flagship airlines across the world working with CSC India, it is the nerve point of the air cargo industry. CSC India is in the best position to predict the future.

We spoke to Mr. Tushar Jani, Chairman, CSC India Pvt. Ltd. on what he thinks the future of air cargo handling will look like. Here is what he had to say, “The worst phase has passed. What matters now is how companies prepare themselves for the new normal. Adopting world-class technology will become a crucial part of air cargo handling future. Robust infrastructure and flexible strategies will decide who survives the tough times ahead.”

Mr. Kelvin Seow, CEO, Mumbai Cargo Service Center Airport Pvt. Ltd. spoke on CSC India’s contribution to the Indian air cargo industry. “The in-house AVSEC training center has been built with the sole purpose of arming employees of the air cargo industry to handle the latest in technology and update them with the latest developments in policies. CSC India is the only air cargo handling company that has an app for end-to-end temperature tracking of temperature-sensitive goods. We have invested heavily in the infrastructure and technology for this app and are continuously adding new features.”

Investments seem optimistic, with the country’s aviation industry expected to witness INR 35,000 crore (US$ 4.99 billion) investment in the next four years, with the government allowing 100% FDI under the automatic route in scheduled air transport service, regional air transport service, and domestic scheduled passenger airline.

Growth drivers for the future:

The growth of cross-border e-commerce will continue to stimulate demand for air cargo services. Air cargo will continue to reign supreme in the transportation of time-sensitive, high-value goods. Dedicated cargo jets will continue to fly in order to live up to the boom driven by online shopping, vaccine distribution, and just-in-time supply chains.

When it comes to digitalization, Cargo Service Center (CSC) had set the precedent even before the pandemic. As the leading provider of airport ground handling in India with over two decades of industry experience, CSC has always believed that digitalization will be the harbinger of future growth and efficiency.

The use of IoT and advanced machine learning technology in cargo handling is one such testimony to its commitment.

In the days ahead, Artificial Intelligence applications coupled with blockchain advancement and the use of robotics are expected to re-shape global supply chain and aviation logistics in the next decade.
